An Uber driver sexually assaulted and kidnapped a vulnerable woman prior to leaving her miles away from her home. Mdsultan Mahamud had subjected a woman in her 20s to a frightening ordeal after he picked her up following a night out in Manchester.
However, instead of dropping her off at her home in Salford, Mahamud, 36 years old, kissed her and locked the doors when she rejected his advances. He than began driving around Manchester and reached into the back seat to sexually assault her.
After around a half hour after being abducted, Mahamud left the girl in Rochdale, leaving her with no clue where she even was. It was thanks to a Good Samaritan who helped her and called the police.
The ordeal was unfortunately made even worse when the girl had been a victim of another violent stranger rape the year prior, when she was attacked after walking home.
As he was being locked up, Judge Angela Nield said “It doesn’t bear thinking about what the complainant went through over that course of time, the anguish and fear she must have suffered following her experience the year before. Bad enough that it should happen, but to happen to such a young woman makes it significantly worse.”
The victim, who since has moved abroad, said she put her trust into Uber, and after being raped she would take taxis rather than walking to try and feel safe. She told the court, “I put my trust in this service because I thought it would be the safest option.”
“I put my trust in a company who I thought would keep me safe from harm.”
Mahamud had apparently kept all details of the case a secret from his wife who was heavily pregnant at the time he was sentenced and sent to prison. According to the judge, she said she was an ‘unintended victim’ of Mahamud.
Mahamud was arrested and at first he claimed no sexual assault had even taken place. After being shown video footage, he was forced to admit it but then lied again saying she was the one who instigated it and the encounter between them was consensual.
