A man from Long Island has allegedly posed as a ride-share driver and then sexually assaulted female passengers when they had fallen asleep while giving them a ride, according to police. When the search of his home took place, the investigation took an even more disturbing turn.
Initially, Raul Guaman had been arrested after he broke Brightwaters home on November 14th and had sexually assaulted a woman at the home while she was sleeping. Days later, he was pulled over by police in Bay Shore. During the search of his phone upon arrest, what they had found widened their investigation, seeing he more than likely had several more victims, according to police.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Suffolk County’s acting police commissioner held up a photo of Guaman and told the media that the case had left him stunned.
“In my almost 37-year career, this is one of the most shocking cases I’ve ever seen, both due to the conduct of the defendant and the potential scope of this crime,” Stuart Cameron stated.
Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini said that the police had recovered videos from Guaman’s cell phone that appeared “to show him sexually abusing a number of women who appear to be unconscious.”
Police believe that the attacks which happened inside of cars had been happening for years, saying that one video had been made dating back to Jan. 2019. Later on, the victim had told police she had no idea what had happened, but that she woke up on a bench in Oak Beach and was missing her cell phone.
After searching Guaman’s Bay Shore home, police say that they found 32 cellphones as well as 16 drivers license, which they believed he took as trophies from his victims. Police are now currently working to identify all of the victims seen on the videos, and are also trying to get in contact with the owners of the licenses and cellphones.
Cameron stated, “The investigation is really very early on in its infancy, so we’re not exactly certain what the full extent and scope will be, but it certainly seems like it’s going to increase in magnitude.”
