A local Uber driver was taken into custody and charged with sexual assault after an incident involving a passenger on August 1st. The driver, identified as Seydina Souleymane Limamou Laye, 37, of Woodbridge, turned himself in to the authorities after being informed of the arrest warrant.
The passenger, a 27-year-old woman, reported the incident to the police on the day it occurred. She stated that Laye had sexually assaulted her during the Uber ride. Detectives from the Prince William County Police Department’s Special Victims Unit investigated the case and ultimately obtained an arrest warrant for Laye on charges of sexual assault.
After being notified about the warrant, Laye turned himself in to the authorities on August 6. He is being held without bond at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center.
Following the incident, Uber released a statement expressing their commitment to safety and support for the victim. The company stated that Laye had been removed from their platform and they were working closely with law enforcement to assist with the investigation.
Uber has faced scrutiny in the past over safety concerns and background checks for drivers. The company has implemented several safety measures, including continuous background checks and a panic button for passengers, in an effort to address these concerns.
