An Uber driver in New York has been apprehended by the authorities on account of allegedly sexually abusing a young passenger, according to a recent report. The 35-year-old driver, identified as Rafael Martinez, was taken into custody following an incident in which he allegedly inappropriately touched a 15-year-old girl during an Uber ride.
The teen’s mother contacted the authorities after her daughter disclosed the disturbing encounter with Martinez. The authorities subsequently arrested the driver, charging him with endangering the welfare of a child, as well as with third-degree sexual abuse. He was arraigned and held on bail at the time.
In response to the incident, an Uber spokesperson expressed the company’s concern and stated that they have zero tolerance for such misconduct, as well as pledged full cooperation with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation. The spokesperson also mentioned that Martinez’s access to the Uber app has been revoked.
Uber has faced numerous accusations and lawsuits related to driver misconduct in recent years, leading to questions about the safety of ride-sharing services. The company has made efforts to improve safety measures for passengers, including background checks and safety features in their app. However, this latest incident raises concerns about whether these measures are sufficient to ensure the safety of all riders, especially minors.
